•H. influenzae causes 4% of community-acquired bacterial meningitis cases in adults.•Majority adult H. are caused by non-typeable serotypes.•Predisposing conditions ENT infections, CSF leakage or immunocompromised state.•Unfavourable outcome adults occurs 17%. BackgroundHaemophilus is an uncommon cause adults.MethodsWe analyzed episodes included a prospective nationwide cohort study the Netherlands.ResultsFrom 2006 to July 2018, 82 2272 (4%) were (mean annual incidence 0.5 patients per 1,000,000). Median age was 61 years (IQR 46–68), and 48 (59%) occurred woman. Predisposing factors otitis and/or sinusitis 33 76 (49%), immunocompromising 19 75 (25%) cerebrospinal fluid leak 13 79 (17%). Serotyping showed 63 80 isolates (79%) (NTHi). Three died 14 (17%) had unfavorable (Glasgow Outcome Scale score < 5 at discharge). Haemophilus influenzae Type b Meningitis
The age-related acquisition of serum anticapsular and bactericidal antibodies to Haemophilus influenzae type b observed in rats was similar to that of humans. The antigenic source for this "natural" immunity was not identified, since neither pharyngeal infection with H. influenzae b nor enteric colonization by cross-reacting bacteria was detected. Infant rats surviving H. influenzae b bacteremi...
متن کاملCommunity-acquired bacterial meningitis in adults.
We reviewed the charts of all patients > or = 15 years of age or older in whom community acquired-bacterial meningitis was diagnosed at Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen, Thailand from 1984 through 1998. Eighty-five patients were included in this study. The clinical manifestation was acute meningitis with CSF neutrophilic pleocytosis and low glucose content. Gram's staining of CSF was positive in...
متن کاملCommunity acquired Staphylococcus aureus meningitis in adults.
We present 9 patients with community acquired Staphylococcus aureus meningitis. Foci of infection outside the central nervous system were present in 8 (89%) patients, mostly endocarditis and pneumonia. Cardiorespiratory complications occurred frequently and 6 patients died (67%). Identification and treatment of the primary focus of infection should be a priority in these patients.
متن کاملCommunity-acquired Listeria monocytogenes meningitis in adults.
BACKGROUND Listeria monocytogenes is the third most common cause of bacterial meningitis. METHODS We prospectively evaluated 30 episodes of community-acquired L. monocytogenes meningitis, confirmed by culture of cerebrospinal fluid specimens, in a nationwide study in The Netherlands. Outcome was graded using the Glasgow outcome score; an unfavorable outcome was defined as a score of 1-4. RE...
متن کاملMolecular Epidemiology of Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae Causing Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Adults
Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is an opportunistic pathogen which causes a variety of respiratory infections. The objectives of the study were to determine its antimicrobial susceptibility, to characterize the β-lactam resistance, and to establish a genetic characterization of NTHi isolates. Ninety-five NTHi isolates were analyzed by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multi ...
